Film Studies Essay: Chasing Amy

Answer One of the following questions in short answer form (2-3 pages).  You will be evaluated
on the following criteria: (1) quality of writing—clarity, organization of paper, good intro, good
closing, well developed body paragraphs; (2) meaningful integration of lecture and film
discussion.

1.      Hooper X is probably the most eccentric character in the film. How does knowing the
CONTEXT of his character reinforce social issues of today?

2.      Throughout the film, Holden seems to be on a path of self-discovery.  Give examples of his
view of BINARY relationships and how they clash with Alyssa’s point of views. Is he a dynamic
character? Does he mature or grow as a person?

3.      One of the themes in the film is the issue of sex.  Do you agree with any of the characters in
their views, or do you have a completely different idea? Use examples in the film to
compare/contrast with your own.
